about

Born from the nostalgic gifts of golden-era studio recording, CHATTER is an ode to the repertoire of actions and movements solidified in the 1960s-1970s studios across the U.S. and U.K. This music explores a question: Are the countless hours of outtakes, studio banter, flubbed takes and demos worthless? Perhaps they can be revisited, highlighted, and repurposed to create new soundscapes and narratives. Where is the line between homage and commentary, trash and compost, tribute and disavowment?

We see in the titles of the compositions a timeline of the archetypical recording session; tuning up, rehearsing, rolling tape, and resetting the equipment for later sessions. We hear throughout the record sounds of the engineer on the talkback microphone, the musicians chatting to each other, and the tuning of instruments. We feel both the anxiety tied to the recording process , like fiddling with a microphone’s placement, and the moments of calm; taking a cigarette break or aimlessly chatting on a live microphone between takes. We may even recognize a pitch-shifted but familiar voice heard from a recording released in 1972 or a snippet of a demo heard on a notable Folk Rock band's expanded greatest hits CD from 1998 (your dad’s favorite).

All of these repurposed moments and brushes with nostalgia in CHATTER aim to present the listener with a feeling. What is old can be made new, and perhaps what was forgotten on the cutting room floor was in fact something that just needed the right frame.
